Tranquil Weather Across The Nation Wednesday

Wednesday December 12th, 2012

Wednesday December 12th, 2012

A relatively calm day expected across the nation tomorrow as reflected in the muted contrast in the Perfect Weather Index. The standout tomorrow will be Texas with a mean of 7.3 followed by Arizona. Actually, southern Arizona will see the best weather in the nation with lots of PWI 9’s and even some 10’s. Most of the 10’s occur in the remote Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range, so not many people will get to enjoy it. Runner up is Scottsdale, Arizona.

At the bottom is Alaska…by far, but what do you expect this time of year?

Best: 1. Texas 2. Arizona 3. Louisiana 4. Mississippi 5. Hawaii
Worst: 1. Alaska 2. Idaho 3. Oregon 4. Montana 5. South Carolina

A Fine Weather Day In Cajun Country Friday

Friday December 7th, 2012

Friday December 7th, 2012

Friday looks very typical for an early winter day with a very even north to south distribution. The best weather overall will be in Louisiana with a mean of 8.7. Washington State will be on the bottom tomorrow. The most PWI 10’s will be in the desert of Arizona and include: Wittmann, Apache Junction, Santa Rosa, Hayden, Picture Rocks, and Organ Pipe Cactus National Park. Outside of Arizona, only a few 10’s in California including: Blythe, Bloomington, Woodcrest, and Lake Elsinore.

The mean for Hawaii (in honor of Pearl Harbor Day) will be a pleasant 7.7.

Best: 1. Louisiana 2. Texas 3. Arizona 4. Mississippi 5. Florida
Worst: 1. Washington 2. Pennsylvania 3. New York 4. Vermont 5. Idaho

Perfect Weather For The Desert Southwest Saturday

Saturday October 27th, 2012

Sandy continues to threaten the East Coast but not until Monday. It still looks like a major storm from the Mid-Atlantic to New England with widespread power outages and heavy rain. Exactly who gets what and when is still a bit uncertain, but the entire region will be affected to some degree.

Meanwhile, Saturday looks like an amazing day for Arizona and California. Perfect 10’s in central Arizona including: Kirkland, Bagdad, Sedona, and parts of the Grand Canyon. Next door in Nevada, Henderson and other areas around Las Vegas look great as well. California will have by far the most 10’s in the country, especially in the central part of the state and in the Bay Area. Mountain Spring, Olancha, Salinas, Sonora, and Fairview are among the perfect spots tomorrow.

Best: 1. Arizona 2. California 3. Georgia 4. Florida 5. Louisiana
Worst: 1. Washington 2. Ohio 3. Montana 4. South Dakota 5. Idaho

Memorial Weekend Forecast

May 26th, 2012

Saturday May 26th, 2012

It’s an important vacation weekend, so I thought I would do PWI map for all three Memorial Weekend days. Of course, three days out, the National Weather Service forecasts might be a bit off on the details, but for the most part it should be accurate.

We start the weekend with some abysmal weather in Montana with a huge area of PWI 1, the lowest score possible. Lots of rain, wind, and cold temperatures in that area.  The best weather will be in New England where Vermont will lead the nation with a mean of 8.5 and even a few perfect 10’s in the southern part of the state. Areas of Northern California will see the most perfect 10’s tomorrow and my pick for Saturday is Santa Rosa, California. The national mean is a low 5.2.

May 27th, 2012

Overall, the mean for the nation increases to 5.7 on Sunday, mainly due to much improved weather in the Desert Southwest. Arizona come in the highest on this day mainly due to less wind and more sunshine. My pick in Arizona is Winona. California will also see quite a few perfect 10′ s on Sunday, but comes in second overall to Arizona, mainly due to the influence of the high Sierra Mountains. My pick in California will be in the foothills of the Sierras…Placerville.  Sorry Montana, this just isn’t your weekend.

On Memorial Day, more improving weather across the nation as the mean rises again to 6.3, but very little perfect weather. This is in part due to the very warm and humid conditions east of the

Mississippi. New England looks like it will have another brilliant day and actually has probably the three best days on average.  Most of the perfect 10’s on Monday appear in the desert of Nevada and

Arizona. My pick for Memorial Day will be Ursine, Nevada.

My Perfect Weather Index

April 30th, 2012

This is the very first perfect weather index blog entry. I hope others are as interested as I am in the pursuit of an “ideal” weather day. So how do I create these maps and what are my criteria? Well, it’s a complicated scientific process using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and total subjectivity. In my mind, 72 degrees, a light breeze, low humidity, and full sunshine is perfect.

So is there some place in the USA that lives up to this high standard tomorrow April 30th, 2012? Only one. 33.736, -109.582 is the latitude and longitude of the location. Where is that? Well, it’s in Arizona in the middle of NOWHERE! I’ll call it Tonto Lake, but the nearest town is 20 miles to the NE called Nutrioso, AZ.
