A Down Day Weather-wise Friday

A down day on the PWI with very few 10s to be had Friday. Some small areas of 10s high in the mountains of Colorado, Nevada, and California. The worst weather will be in New England with Maine coming out on the bottom. Overall, the heat and precipitation will keep the entire country down.

Topsy-turvy Weather In The West

Perfect weather in Reno, Nevada and Flagstaff, Arizona Tuesday but overall California comes out as the best state. The 1s plaguing the Pacific Northwest move into the Rockies Tuesday and may surprise some tourists with snow. This is about the closest I have seen 10s and 1s together on the map, separated by only 500 miles.

PWI

Best: 1. California 2. Nevada 3. Maine 4. Arizona 5. Vermont
Worst: 1. Wyoming 2. Idaho 3. Florida 4. Montana 5. Oklahoma

Best Weather For The Entire Month Of May Goes To…

The monthly total for May are in! The overall best state was California and this is the state with the best location in the country. And that location is: Camanche Reservoir which is about 40 miles SE of Sacramento. The worst state was Vermont, just beating out Maine. And the worst location was Mt. Washington, NH, a notoriously bad weather site.

Golden State Shines; Wyoming Get Late Snow Storm

PWI

A beautiful day on Thursday in parts of California including my own area. (Very happy). Some of this extends into the Rogue Valley of Oregon as well and California overall is the winner. With the huge snowstorm in the Rockies, very low PWI numbers in Wyoming including Cheyenne. Too hot in the east so PWI are a bit tempered by that though sunshine will abound.

Best: 1. California 2. Oregon 3. Rhode Island 4. Arizona 5. Missouri
Worst: 1. Wyoming 2. Wyoming 3. Colorado 4. Nebraska 5. Wisconsin

Very Low Perfect Weather Scores Monday

12_10_2012

December 10th, 2012

It’s very rare for California to be on the top of the PWI list due to its varied terrain and climates. While Southern Califorina may score as high as a perfect 10, the Sierra Neveada Mountains often come in so much lower that they drag down the mean for the state. But on Monday, the mean for the nation is so low (4.8) that California has it’s chance to be #1. I’m forecasting only 57 grid squares of perfect weather tomorrow, all of which will be in Southern California.  Several towns lie in the perfect 10 areas in California including: Buellton, Santa Paula, Mission Viejo, Bonsall, Winchester, and Hemet.

A nasty cold front from Portland, Maine to Houston, Texas will lead to nothing better than PWI 5’s over a wide portion of the Eastern US.

Best: 1. California 2. South Carolina 3. Arizona 4. Florida 5. Georgia Worst: 1. Vermont 2. Maine 3. New York 4. New Hampshire 5. Ohio

Florida Not The Sunshine State On Sunday

Sunday August 26th, 2012

Isaac will continue to be the big weather story on Sunday. All of the Florida Peninsula will start to feel it’s effects on Sunday as it passes very near Key West Sunday night. It looks like now tropical storm Isaac will have some interaction with Cuba, so strengthening doesn’t seem likely today. Once it emerges into the Gulf all bests are off. Hopefully it will not grow into a monster in the Gulf of Mexico, but it wouldn’t surprise me if we have a major hurricane at landfall in the Florida Panhandle Tuesday night. So if you live in that area, don’t take a chance and start thinking about leaving.

Eagle Lake – Joseph D Grant County Park. San Jose, California

Outside of Florida, actually a pretty nice day for most of the nation. The national mean will be 7.1, but without Florida I suspect it would be a bit higher. Only a few hundred grid squares with perfect 10’s though, significantly less than Saturday. Most of the perfect weather will be along the California Coast including: Maple Creek, Whitehorn, San Jose, and King City. A few scattered perfect 10’s in the mountains of the Idaho Panhandle and Western Montana.

I would also like to point out a great late summer day in Southeast Alaska with widespread PWI 7’s and 8’s…even a few 9’s. This is a little unusual in that the rainy season is usually in full swing by now. Over the whole state the mean is a miserable 4.2 though.

   Best                    Worst

1. North Dakota      1. Alaska
2. Maine                     2. Florida
3. Minnesota            3. Arkansas
4. Montana               4. Oklahoma
5. Massachusetts    5. Texas

Perfect Weather For Northern Maine Friday

Friday August 24th, 2012

A very large area of perfect 10’s thrusts Maine to the top of the list on Friday. This huge area is largely in Aroostook County which is one of the least densely populated counties in the East with a population of just over 71,000 in 6,800 square miles. Aroostook County is about the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. A few towns in Northern Maine with perfect weather tomorrow: Preque Isle, Loring, Oxbow, Dudley, and Ripogenus. A few perfect 10’s on some of the capes north of Portland as well. Over in Vermont, the excellent weather continues with Morgan Center and Westmore with 10’s.

The rest of the perfect 10’s will be out West and split between California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho. A sample of some of these includes: Orofino, Idaho…Cottonwood, Idaho…Cascade, Idaho…Prairie, Idaho…La Grande, Oregon…Monument, Oregon…Idanha, Oregon…Comptche, California…Guerneville, California (yet again)…Fairfax, California…Mammoth Lakes, California…San Luis Obispo, California…and finally La Conchita, California.

Since Guerneville, California has appeared at least 5 times in the last few weeks, I thought it would appropriate to feature it today. Just so you’re aware, this is not a fluke! Check here for the forecast for Guerneville and you can see why it keeps appearing. What is making Guerneville’s climate so perfect? Take a look at the map below and notice a couple of features. First, Guerneville is not on the immediate coast. Compare the forecast with Jenner, California where highs are not expected to even reach 60 degrees. Temperatures over in the Santa Rosa Valley are just a tad too warm to make a perfect 10. And last, Guerneville is surrounded by mountains which provides protection and keeps the wind down.

Armstrong Redwood Natural Preserve – California

This area is home to some amazing Redwood trees and the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. Redwoods up to 2,000 years and grow to as much as 350 feet tall! Coast redwoods are classified as temperate rainforests and they need wet and mild climates to survive. The rainfall in Armstrong Redwoods averages 55 inches per year and the trees are often shrouded in a mystical fog that helps to maintain the moist conditions needed for the redwoods to survive.

Best 1. Maine 2. Oregon 3. Vermont 4. New Hampshire 5. Idaho
Worst 1. Alaska 2. Oklahoma 3. Texas 4. Louisiana 5. Kansas
