Southern California is living up to its reputation of perfect weather this week with a string of excellent days, though nothing with a perfect 10. A narrow strip of 9’s appear on the map from San Bernardino south to Hemet, California. This is away from the coast where fog and clouds will persist longer and keep temperatures in the 60’s, but not so far inland to the deserts where it will be above 90 degrees.
Outside of Southern California, not much above PWI 8, except in the foothills SW of Denver, Colorado. There is a small area of PWI 9 around Indian Hills, Colorado. Why the foothills and not in Denver proper? Highs in Denver will go above 80 degrees, slightly warm for my taste.
I altered the color scale to give it more contrast and make it easier to read.

Only portions of California and a spec in South Dakota even reach the 9 on the perfect weather index tomorrow May 3rd, 2012. Areas around Bakersfield (mainly on the west side of the San Juaquin Valley) will see the best weather in the nation. And as I mentioned, one tiny area around Oelrichs, South Dakota gets to a 9. Certainly not a bad day around Philadelphia or the mountainous areas of the Southwest. By far the worst weather will be found in the southwest part of Oregon and Northern California. Brookings, Oregon is expecting 1-2″ of rain and gusty winds. Hot humid and windy from west Texas to Chicago makes for low perfect weather scores.
I changed the map projection to Albers Equal Area Conic if any GIS nerds are interested. I also noticed the scale has been changing based on the top score. It should always read 1 to 10.

I suspect that this will be more common than not. There are no perfect 10s on the map for May 2nd, 2012. Perhaps the winds are a little breezy, or maybe there will be some high thin clouds which prevents the perfect score. Either way, the index is designed to show a “prefect” day, not a fine day, of which there will be many. If I were in Fargo, North Dakota tomorrow, I certainly wouldn’t complain with a score of 9, but it demonstrates just how picky I am. Another excellent choice tomorrow: Sacramento, California.
